A few days ago, the DVD The Melancholy of Haruhi of Suzumiya (an awesome series), distributed by Bandai, made its way to store shelves. The box was quite big and pricey; however, it seems to even out the price with extras in the box. After listening to Otakus at Best Buy pestering how the box set needs certain episodes in the Vol. 1 DVD, I finally bought one to see what’s up.

For the Gunslinger Girls fans; Good Smile produces the 1/8 Henrietta. The PVC model has Henrietta in her casual gray school uniform holding her Amati violin case (in the series it’s a modified Amati violin case to fit a P90 submachine gun) and a Switzerland Sig-Sauer P239 pistol.

Anime Boston

The Spring Con Season got itself off to an early start this year when I and the administrator of the website, Quadrain.com decided to make a trek to a con neither one of us had gone to before; this led us up north to Anime Boston in the New England area. Seeing as neither one of us had ever ventured out to this particular convention celebrating Japanese Anime or to the city of Boston, Massachusetts before, it was a new experience for the both of us, but luckily the good old fashion feel of a moderately sized con made things relaxing in the middle of a rather hectic and rough start to the weekend.

The Friday of Anime Boston had the Friday blues because of most of the con attendees were still in school, leaving the morning quite empty in the convention center. One even people seemed to conjure for was for registration. The line moved in a snake pattern from the back of the room to the front then disconnected to continue from the back of the room to the forward in a straight line. This was some what of a frustration since it put people’s hope high then completely shot down. After hours for the attendees to get their badges it was the start of the convention. During the entire day there was not much going on until later in the afternoon when the convention would actually open for business. The artist’s alley and the Dealer’s room were the two main events that everyone wanted to head to that day.

While a major setback for me overall, these events weren’t catastrophic to my overall encounters and adventures in Boston and the con itself. I was able to get in and check out the events of Anime Boston, which was held at the Sheraton Hotel connected to the Heines Convention Center. A large and spacious venue choice for the event made even more convenient by also being connected to the Prudential Tower Mall which provided plenty of eateries and resources for the convention attendees.

The Mall of course services the public, and with the convention in town, the locals got their share of both amusement and astonishment of seeing a multitude of many young people wondering around in colorful costumes and attire throughout the weekend. I found myself most amused by an employee of a pizzeria where one employee was sporting a Naruto headband while another wore a Peter Pan outfit to ‘rebel against anime’ in good humor; it’s good to see that overall the local community was accepting to the con being there, what with many other events including a Greek Cultural Festival and Parade happening nearby.

As for the actual convention itself, there was plenty going on in the convention center, and the con made good use of its large space, the registration room itself was in a ballroom area of the hotel, the con definitely has plenty of space to use as it continues to grow over the years to come.

The guest list sported a familiar array of American guests as well as some exciting Japanese guests, mainly directors and producers of various anime series. A big array of American voice actors and industry guests were present throughout the weekend, but so were a few select Japanese directors, writers and producers, who gave fans a rare chance to talk to them about the various series they had worked on. Director Yasuhiro Imagawa, known for his work as the director behind the 90s OAV series Giant Robo and the G-Gundam TV series was happily enthusiastic to answer fans questions and even more excited by fans who were showcasing their love his works.

The English voice acting group numbered quite largely at the con, con regulars including Greg Ayres, Luci Christian, and Mike Farland were in attendance; many others were regulars of various shows released by Funimation. Also present was Mike Sinterniklaas, who voices not only anime characters such as the lead of infamous giant robot show GaoGaiGar and Dean Venture from Adult Swim’s popular animated series The Venture Brothers. All of which were at panels that attracted a crowd of fans of their work in providing English voiceovers in Japanese animation.

Also present were the people behind the successful wrestling league Kaiju Big Battel, who have taken the influences of Japanese sci-fi/monster movies, anime, and professional wrestling into a wild and fun territory. Sadly this year they didn’t hold any ring matches, but Dr. Cube and Loudin Noxious were there with some of the Kaiju crew to promote their newest Kaiju monster throughout the weekend and during a special panel Sunday afternoon.

Boston is definitely a colorful and rich city filled with history, I found myself having many moments of marveling at the old brick buildings and architecture on my walks from the subway to the convention center, which it too was definitely a unique location for something as alien as an Anime Con. The Heines building was a very large three story building with towering hallways and plenty of walking space, something that some smaller con venues lack. The Dealers room, Main events and many of the other rooms where various panels and workshops were held in were large and spacious enough to not cause too much bumping and shoving around. The building had a very relaxed and calming atmosphere to it which really helped to keep the overall move in good spirits.
