Beowulf: A New Verse Translation
There are endless pleasures in Heaney's analysis, but readers should head straight for the poem and then to the prose. (Some will also take advantage of the dual-language edition and do some linguistic teasing out of their own.) The epic's outlines seem simple, depicting Beowulf's three key battles with the scaliest brutes in all of art: Grendel, Grendel's mother (who's in a suitably monstrous snit after her son's dismemberment and death), and then, 50 years later, a gold-hoarding dragon "threatening the night sky / with streamers of fire." Along the way, however, we are treated to flashes back and forward and to a world view in which a thane's allegiance to his lord and to God is absolute. In the first fight, the man from Geatland must travel to Denmark to take on the "shadow-stalker" terrorizing Heorot Hall. Here Beowulf and company set sail: Men climbed eagerly up the gangplank, sand churned in the surf, warriors loaded a cargo of weapons, shining war-gear in the vessel's hold, then heaved out, away with a will in their wood-wreathed ship. Over the waves, with the wind behind her and foam at her neck, she flew like a bird... After a fearsome night victory over march-haunting and heath-marauding Grendel, our high-born hero is suitably strewn with gold and praise, the queen declaring: "Your sway is wide as the wind's home, / as the sea around cliffs." Few will disagree. And remember, Beowulf has two more trials to undergo. Heaney claims that when he began his translation it all too often seemed "like trying to bring down a megalith with a toy hammer." The poem's challenges are many: its strong four-stress line, heavy alliteration, and profusion of kennings could have been daunting. (The sea is, among other things, "the whale-road," the sun is "the world's candle," and Beowulf's third opponent is a "vile sky-winger." When it came to over-the-top compound phrases, the temptations must have been endless, but for the most part, Heaney smiles, he "called a sword a sword.") Yet there are few signs of effort in the poet's Englishing. Heaney varies his lines with ease, offering up stirring dialogue, action, and description while not stinting on the epic's mix of fate and fear. After Grendel's misbegotten mother comes to call, the king's evocation of her haunted home may strike dread into the hearts of men and beasts, but it's a gift to the reader: A few miles from here a frost-stiffened wood waits and keeps watch above a mere; the overhanging bank is a maze of tree-roots mirrored in its surface. At night there, something uncanny happens: the water burns. And the mere bottom has never been sounded by the sons of men. On its bank, the heather-stepper halts: the hart in flight from pursuing hounds will turn to face them with firm-set horns and die in the wood rather than dive beneath its surface. That is no good place. In Heaney's hands, the poem's apparent archaisms and Anglo-Saxon attitudesits formality, blood-feuds, and insane courageturn the art of an ancient island nation into world literature. Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 1
It’s the spring of freshman year, and Kanji Sasahara is in a quandary. Should he fulfill his long-cherished dream of joining an otaku club? Saki Kasukabe also faces a dilemma. Can she ever turn her boyfriend, anime fanboy Kousaka, into a normal guy? Kanji triumphs where Saki fails, when both Kanji and Kousaka sign up for Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture. Undeterred, Saki chases Kousaka through the various activities of the club, from costume-playing and comic conventions to video gaming and collecting anime figures–learning more than she ever wanted to about the humorous world of the Japanese fan . . . Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 2
Kanji Sasahara has finally accepted that he’s a true otaku who belongs in the Genshiken. Meanwhile, Saki Kasukabe still can’t stand how much time her boyfriend, video game master Kousaka, wastes with the Genshiken guys. Saki isn’t the only one who’s upset that the club members do nothing but sit around playing video games. Kitagawa, the vicious vice president of the campus activities organization, is determined to break up the Genshiken. But the Prez has some dirt (and leverage) on Kitagawa. In fact, the Prez seems to have the lowdown on a lot of students–including Saki Kasukabe, who suddenly harbors a fear of hidden cameras! Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 3
Kanji Sashara’s annoyingly normal little sister, Keiko, has fallen for video game master Kousaka. And now she’s willing to do whatever it takes to steal him away from his girlfriend, Saki Kasukabe . . . even if it means becoming a fangirl herself! But as a wise member of the Genshiken once said: “You don’t become an otaku by trying.” So Saki teaches Keiko-chan what dating a rabid fan truly means . . . and it ain’t pretty. Then, just to add to the craziness, there’s plastic modeling mayhem (don’t ask), the challenge of Kanji’s first PC, and Saki’s penchant for pyromania. Looks like things are heating up! Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 4
A short time ago, college freshman Kanji Sasahara was struggling with an otaku identity crisis, but joining the Genshiken gave Kanji the confidence to fully embrace the otaku lifestyle. So when club president Madarame resigns from office, he pegs Kanji as the best candidate to fill his shoes. And what is President Sasahara’s first order of business? To create a Genshiken fanzine to sell at the next Comic-Fest, which seems to many like a bold step for the notoriously inactive Genshiken. Meanwhile, cosplay aficionados Ohno and Tanaka appear to be spending a lot of time together. Does that mean love is in the air? Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 5
The Genshiken has long been famous for its remarkable record of inactivity. But now that Kanji Sasahara has stepped in as the new club president, it looks as though things may change. Kanji wants the club to produce its first fanzine–and when the Genshiken members are accepted as official vendors at the summer Comic-Fest, they are forced to create a real doujinshi . . . and fast! With only a month before the submission deadline, can this sluggish bunch of otaku actually get anything done? Meanwhile, Kousaka is about to reveal a secret side of himself that nobody has ever seen. . . . Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 6
Ogiue is determined to sell her own doujinshi at the next ComicFest. What genre is she attempting? Why a gay romance . . . starring none other than Madarame and Kanji Sasahara. But when Saki-san catches a glimpse of one of Ogiue’s sketches, she gets the wrong idea. Now Saki is convinced that Ogiue is in love with Kanji, and she’s dead set on playing Cupid. Meanwhile, as Madarame and Tanaka prepare to graduate, Kanji is about to become a busy senior. He’s ready to step down from the Genshiken oval office. But who will take over the role of club president? Here’s a hint . . . can you say cosplay? Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 7
On a lunch break at the Genshiken, Madarame is minding his own business when in walks Angela, a blond, blue-eyed otaku unlike anyone he has ever seen. However, Angela seems to know all about him! It turns out that Angela and her pal Susie, old friends of Ohno’s, are visiting from the United States. Angela has a taste for hardcore doujinshi, and Sue can’t seem to stop quoting offensive lines from her favorite anime. In just two days, the American visitors manage to turn the Genshiken upside down. Can the club survive a visit from these ambassadors of otakudom without inciting an international incident? Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 8
The Genshiken girls have been trying to spark a little romance between Kanji and Ogiue for months–and a Genshiken trip to a hot springs resort seems like the perfect opportunity. When Ogiue falls sick, Ohno assigns Kanji to take care of her. The rest of the Genshiken gang leave for the day, and Kanji is finally ready to make his move. Ogiue, though, is convinced that Kanji will never accept her fan-girl ways. To settle things, Kanji will have to read her doujinshi–the one in which he stars! How will Kanji react when he finds himself to be the centerpiece of Ogiue’s masterwork? The answer will decide whether their relationship lives of dies! Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 9
It’s graduation day for Kanji, Kousaka, and Saki–and the whole Genshiken gang is there to cheer them on. Get ready for the biggest celebration of all time! Kanpai! Final volume. Grendel
